From Ontological to Semantic Disagreement

چکیده
Among Quine’s main concerns in his “On What There Is”, there was that of solving a problem of expressibility for ontological denials. His proposed solution to such a problem was, in a purely Carnapian vein, a shift of attention to the semantic features of ontological claims – what Quine called the strategy of “semantic ascent”. Quine’s relevant assumption is that talk about language is much less controversial than first-order talk of worldly items. My contention is that the semantic ascent strategy fails as a somehow “neutral” means to clarify ontological disputes and that it is better understood as a means to resolve or even dissolve such disputes.

Decentralized Semantic Coordination Via Belief Propagation
This paper proposes a decentralized method for communities of agents to reach semantic agreements on subjective ontology elements’ correspondences / mappings, via belief propagation. Agents detect disagreements on mapping decisions via feedback they receive from others, and they revise their decisions on correspondences with respect to their mapping preferences and the semantics of ontological ...
متن کاملHeritability and causal reasoning
Gene–environment (G–E) covariance is the phenomenon whereby genetic differences bias variation in developmental environment, and is particularly problematic for assigning genetic and environmental causation in a heritability analysis. The interpretation of these cases has differed amongst biologists and philosophers, leading some to reject the utility of heritability estimates altogether. This ...
متن کاملOntological View-Driven Semantic Integration in Collaborative Networks
In collaborative enterprise networks, semantic heterogeneity is an important factor that hinders collaboration of various information systems. Ontology-driven semantic integration is an important category of solutions for the semantic integration problem. However, in many domains, there are no explicit and formal ontologies available. This paper proposes to adopt ontological views to address su...
متن کاملOntological Impedance in 3d Semantic Data Modeling
An impedance mismatch exists between spatial data models and spatial ontologies, between the language of geometric representations and the language of specific application domains. We call it ontological impedance. Overcoming ontological impedance is a difficult task, since various problems are involved, like the coherence between the semantic and the geometric levels, the abstraction from vari...
متن کاملEmergence of ontological relations from visual data with Self-Organizing Maps
In this paper we examine how Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs) can be used in detecting and describing emergent ontological relations between semantic objects and object classes in a visual database. The ontological relations we have studied include co-existence, taxonomies of visual and semantic similarity and spatial relationships. The used database contains 2618 images, each of which belongs to on...
